What is phonics?

Phonics is a way of teaching children to read and write, alongside other strategies, to enable children to become confident readers and writers. It introduces children to the 44 phonics sounds in the English language and helps them to hear, identify and use them in words from the start of Early Years.

What approach do we use at Cranham?

At Cranham, we follow the systematic synthetic phonics programme Read, Write Inc

What resources do we use at Cranham?

Green word cards are words that use the sounds children have learnt and are green to show that children are able to read them. One side shows sound buttons to help children to blend the individual sounds together to form the word and the other does not, to show children that they should be reading them on sight (fluently, at speed).

Red word cards are words that have 'tricky' patterns or sounds that children have not learnt yet. We 'spread the red' around our classrooms and practise reading these whenever we can.

Fred the puppet helps us to segment and blend sounds together to form words (also known as Fred Talk). He helps us in our phonics sessions... although he can sometimes try to trick us!
