Phase 5

Phase 5- Children learn further phonemes and explore alternative graphemes (the written form of sounds) and pronunciations during this phase. They will also be introduced to split digraphs (two letters which form one sound but are separated by another sound) e.g. c a k e, where the a and e make one sound together.

Children are expected to reach phase 5 in Year 1 and it is at this point, at the end of the year, where children take the Phonics Screening Check (PSC). As a school, we ensure that any children who do not reach the expected level in this check receive further tailored support in their reading, writing and spelling.
